Medical cosmetic lasers are proven to effectively treat wrinkles, photo-ageing and skin discolourations that time and sun have wrought. The Cynosure Apogee Elite laser treatments can reverse the signs of ageing and sun damage.
Skin Pigmentation disorders affect the colour of your skin. Skin cells give your skin colour by making a substance called melanin. When these cells become damaged and unhealthy, it affects melanin production and you can develop brown spots or age related spots on the skin. Often this pigmentation is most noticeable on the face, hands and feet.
Types of pigmentation
When our body produces to much melanin it causes hyper pigmentation. When it produces to too little melanin this causes hypo pigmentation. The pigmentation areas can often look like birthmarks or freckles depending on how they are laid out on the skin, and can often take an uneven appearance.
Types of treatment
Most common pigmentation disorders such as solar lentigines – sun/age spots and freckles are most commonly treated by laser. For other hormonally triggered pigmentation such as malasma/chloasma, which is similar in appearance to sun/age sports just larger in size maybe best treated with a skin peel (please link to page) Hypo pigmentation is most commonly treated by microdermabrasion or skin resurfacers
What causes Skin pigmentation
Since the greatest reason for pigmentation is due to genetics, if you have a family history of pigmentation your chances of also experiencing it are increased. Extensive sun exposure or if you have suffered from skin burns this also increases your risk of developing pigmentation. Hormones can also play a part in developing skin pigmentation, pregnancy is a very common cause of malasma.
The treatment causes only minimal discomfort and any initial soreness is easily alleviated with a cold air cooling system.
How many Treatments are required?
Typically three to four treatments maybe required but many see results with as little as one treatment. Treatment times vary between 10 – 30 minutes depending on the size of the area to be treated and type of pigmentation we are treating. Immediately after the treatment for pigmentation the skin looks darker, Over the next few days you develop a “dirty look” when the skin develops very fine mottling and looks darker as the destroyed pigment is extruded from the cells. This settles after a few days leaving the skin looking smoother and fresher.
